Training and Education
Program Manager, Luis Vega, Ph.D.
PICHTR has developed, implemented and managed education and training programs that build indigenous expertise, leadership and capabilities without compromising local customs and cultural values. These efforts have produced a network of experts and resources throughout the Pacific Islands region.
The new emphasis will be to provide technical training using the Kahua Test Facility as well as systems already installed in the South Pacific. Following the process implemented for the Nabouwalu and Vunivau Village Power projects, training will be performed prior to installation of new systems and to insure the additional indigenous operators are available. Trainees will already have skills as electrical and mechanical technicians. Trainees will be trained to become trainers. Training will be performed in collaboration with indigenous organizations like Fiji Institute of Technology (FIT) and the University of the South Pacific (USP). Most of the technicians in the South Pacific are trained at FIT while energy planners are schooled at USP.
