Renewable Energy

The goal of the Renewable Energy Program is to advance sustainable development in Hawaii and the Pacific Region. The program focuses on identifying appropriate renewable energy technologies and integrating these technologies into the energy system planning process of an island community.

PICHTR has been a leader in the development of alternate energy systems involving ocean, biomass, wind and solar energy technologies. To broaden their applicability within utility and stand-alone environments, PICHTR utilizes an integrated energy approach in developing alternate energy solutions that work in combination with each other and storage systems.

Funding for the current program comes from the Government of Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and is used to provide solar electric power to un-electrified villages in Fiji in a Renewable Energy-based Rural Electrification (RERE) initiative
