Rex Johnson | Project Director

Rex Johnson is the PICHTR Project Director supporting the University of Hawaii’s National Disaster Preparedness Training Center.  Prior to his PICHTR appointment, he was the President & CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) where he worked closely with the U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration (ITA) on strengthening the U.S. and Hawaii tourism brand and chaired the Return on Investment Subcommittee and their recommendations on national standards to measure the impact of the industry on the economy, balance of trade, job creation travel trends, and market segments. Mr. Johnson was appointed by United States Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez to serve on the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory (USTTA) Board.

Mr. Johnson has been the Director of the John A. Burns School of Medicine Physical Facilities where he coordinated the interests of landowners, zoning authorities, engineers, architects, contractors and government agencies.  From December 1994 to July 2001, Johnson served as executive director for the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii, and was director of the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation from December 1991 to December 1994, and head of the Hawaii Community Development Authority from 1983 to 1991. Mr. Johnson graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Transportation Business Management.
